COVID-19 Delayed Earth Overshoot Day 2020 | UPSC

      HEADLINES:

How will COVID-19 affect the date of Earth Overshoot Day 2020?

      WHY IN NEWS:

Humanity’s efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic, and the resulting economic slowdown, have reduced humanity’s Footprint.

SYLLABUS COVERED: GS 1 : 3 : Climate Change : Earth

      LEARNING:

For PRELIMS aim of this data , calculation , report(we will bring it to you very soon) etc are very important .

For MAINS this is all about how much food is left out in your plate ! We are going to dive into resources human beings are left over with .

Note down the key facts you want to assemble it in your Mains copies .

      ISSUE:

COVID-19 has caused the human ecological footprint to contract.

EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.

ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

  • The Ecological Footprint is the most comprehensive biological resource accounting metric available.

It adds up all biologically productive areas – food, timber, fibers, carbon sequestration, and accommodation of infrastructure.

  • Currently, carbon emissions from burning fossil fuel make up 60 percent of humanity’s Ecological Footprint.

WHO COLLECTS THE DATA?

  • To include the impacts from the coronavirus pandemic this year, Global Footprint Network combined the most reliable data.

WHAT IS THE DATA?

  • This forms the most reasonable assumptions to assess humanity’s current resource situation.
  • Changes in carbon emissions, forest harvest, food demand, and other factors that could impact the Ecological Footprint from January 1 to Earth Overshoot Day are evaluated.

The main drivers were the carbon Footprint (reduced 14.5% from 2019) and the forest product Footprint (reduced 8.4% from 2019).

CALCULATION OF EARTH OVERSHOOT

  • To determine the date of Earth Overshoot Day, we need to calculate the number of days of that year that Earth’s biocapacity suffices to provide for humanity’s Ecological Footprint.
  • The remainder of the year corresponds to global overshoot.
  • A country’s overshoot day is the date on which Earth Overshoot Day would fall if all of humanity consumed like the people in this country.

It is determined this year’s country overshoot days using the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts’ edition of the prior year.

  • Therefore, country overshoot days for 2020 are based on the 2019 edition.

REAL-TIME CALCULATION

Let’s take Switzerland’s 2020 overshoot day, for example:

  • The Ecological Footprint for Switzerland is 64 gha per person (in 2016)
  • Global biocapacity is 63 gha per person (in 2016)

Therefore, it would take (4.64/ 1.63) = 2.8 Earths if everyone lived like the Swiss.

OR

We can determine Switzerland’s overshoot day, taking 2020 is a leap year, as 366 * (1.63/4.64) = 129th day in the year.

The 129th day of 2020 is the 8th of May, Switzerland’s Overshoot Day.

IMPORTANT NOTE

  • Not all countries will have an overshoot day.

A country will only have an overshoot day if their Ecological Footprint per person is greater than global biocapacity per person (1.63 gha).

  • Countries whose Ecological Footprint per person are less than global biocapacity per person (1.63 gha) and do not have an overshoot day are therefore not included in the list .
  • In leap years, it is compare the date against 366 days of the year, rather than the usual 365.

EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY 2020 AND COVID-19

  • #MoveTheDate of Earth Overshoot Day towards one-planet living by design is trending.
  • Global Footprint Network advocates for strategies that enable a transition to one-planet prosperity.
  • Increasing resource security everywhere ranks high on the list of those strategies.
